Susannah is a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist located in Los Angeles, California. She was first inspired to start A Greater Gorgeous after writing a version of this post on not washing your hair for her salon's blog. At work, Susannah thrives on helping her clients feel more beautiful every day, not just the day they get their hair or makeup done; at home, she thrives on coffee, movies, and quality time with her husband, Corbin, and their cockapoo, Ivy.

Susannah began her beauty career in 2011, three years after graduating from James Madison University ('08) with a B.A. in Philosophy & Religion, when she became the receptionist at La Bella Hair Studio in Richmond, Virginia. Within a few months of starting there, she decided to begin an apprenticeship under the salon's owner, Jessica Menz-Crenshaw. During her apprenticeship she continued to act as the salon's receptionist and manager in addition to taking classes, practicing on mannequins, and seeing clients. She also managed the salon's social media accounts as Social Media Director.

Susannah received her cosmetology license in April of 2013 and became a junior stylist, having already built a clientele. A year later she was promoted to Stylist, and in August of 2015 she was promoted to Senior Stylist. See the portfolio for examples of her work.

"Although we are a generation apart, Susannah is a perfect match for me! I came to her with over-processed color and a haircut for a 50-something — but needed a 30-something style to match my energy! Over several months, Susannah worked tirelessly to get my color just right, and transformed my ho-hum cut into one which reflected my active and casual lifestyle. After a period of time, I decided to grow my hair — a previously horrendous experience — and Susannah got me through it, refusing to let me fail." — Ellen
"When I met Susannah my hair was in pretty bad shape. I have thick, long, naturally curly hair. When I began going to her it was damaged from excessive heat styling and coloring. It was pretty long, but thin in the ends from breakage and splitting. Susannah brought my hair back to life! She really took the time to coach me through what I should do between appointments and took my concerns into consideration. I am obsessed with growing my hair very long and I know I wouldn't have such long and healthy hair if it wasn't for her! I come to her solely for trims which I'm sure isn't her most lucrative service, but that makes no difference in the treatment and time she gives me." — Brittney

Susannah is a self-taught makeup artist, having begun studying in late 2012. She quickly became the lead makeup artist at La Bella Hair Studio in Richmond, Virginia and has done makeup for photo shoots, ISSE in Los Angeles, LA Rams Cheer (through their partnership with Mirabella Beauty), and a variety of weddings. Since moving to Los Angeles she's been a makeup artist and educator for Mirabella Beauty, and she's also had the opportunity to work in the Hair & Makeup Department for several films including indie film This is My Year. See the portfolio for examples of her work.

"Susannah has done my makeup for two separate events. At the first event, she gave me a beautiful, natural look that played up my best features and held up through a long, hot day. For the second event, my look was romantic and glamorous. Susannah is a talented, meticulous artist whose work is flawless. She has a wonderfully calming presence, as well. I loved working with Susannah." - Lindsey
"Susannah was my wedding make up and hair stylist and I absolutely enjoyed working with her! Not only is she fun, confident, knowledgable and great at her job, but she went above and beyond to make my entire experience feel extra special. She treats her customers like dear friends. I wouldn't use anyone else and will always wholeheartedly recommend her!!" - Christine

Susannah started her beauty blog, A Greater Gorgeous (now, early in 2013 out of a desire to share the knowledge she realized a lot of clients, friends, and family didn't have. She was first inspired to start the blog after writing a post on not washing your hair every day for La Bella's blog.

Eventually Susannah decided to focus the blog on beauty tips for beginners. Seeing an abundance of advanced beauty blogs and YouTube channels, she saw and heard from her clients a need for more basic information and tutorials. Now, Susannah blogs about hair, makeup, and skincare tips aimed toward beginners and everyday women, in addition to addressing issues surrounding body image and self-confidence.

More Testimonials

"Susannah is a gifted and talented stylist, colorist, and makeup artist. I am picky about who I let touch my hair. Every time I sit in her chair I know that I will leave thrilled. From cut to color, she listens to my vision and executes it perfectly. As a makeup artist, she can take a blank canvas and make a beautiful masterpiece. She is very innovative and able to give you the looks you are seeking be it glam, edgy, or casual. A true professional in every sense of the word." - Cindy C

"Susannah is a very engaging individual. She listens to what I want, she offers suggestions when I want to change my look. I've received many compliments over the years on the highlights, cuts, styling and all over coloring she's done to my hair. When I sit in Susannah's chair, I never worry about the outcome of my look. Most times, I just let Susannah work her magic and leave La Bella feeling pleased and refreshed. She has matured in the 4 short years I've known her as a beautician and grown into an accomplished stylist. I have given friends her card and told them to use my name as a reference. I knew they wouldn't be disappointed with her work." - Annette W.

"Susannah did an AMAZING job on my hair and makeup for a photo shoot. I loved the curls and the lipstick color she chose. She is so sweet and even gave me the lipstick to keep!" - Christina D.

"When I first came to Susannah, my hair was a mess. I had made the mistake of going into a beauty salon in the mall for a quick trim. BIG mistake. I asked the stylist to trim the edges of my hair. She decided to cut at least 3 inches and layer my hair. I did not like it...[Susannah] basically started from scratch as my hair was in many lengths and I wanted it all one length. She has done a great job helping me obtain my vision. The layers are gone and my hair is long again. I have received many compliments about my hair color since I started seeing Susannah. She does a great job with color and highlights." — Brandy B.

"Susannah is fantastic. She gives a great, collaborative consultation and does amazing work. She did my hair for my wedding as well as my color and cuts for several years. I can't say enough great things about her." - Austin B.

"Susannah cut and colored my hair in Richmond, VA for a few years - a few WONDERFUL years! She has a welcoming personality, consults with her clients on every step she is taking, and always wrangled my curly hair so I left the salon so happy and already excited for my next visit. I just wish she was still in my neck of the woods, but I know she will stir up quite the following in LA. *scoop her up fast*" - Courtney F.
