Cruelty-free. It's one of those expressions like "vegan" or "naturally sourced" or "kale salad" that sometimes elicits an eye-roll when it comes up in conversation. While these things have always been around, they've become more mainstream in the last decade or two for a very good reason: more and more people are becoming aware and intentional about the effect we, as humans, have on the other living beings on the planet (and on the planet itself).
We see this mostly in our food, but believe it or not animal cruelty still exists in the beauty industry. Products are tested on animals through every level of production, and while you may think that a little makeup can't do much harm, don't forget that these animals are not plucked from the wild each time we need to test a lip gloss. They're kept in cages, often for the duration of their lives, which is no more natural and comfortable for them than it would be for us.
It's not my intention to get up on a soap box about animal cruelty (that's for another blog), but when it comes to beauty products, the truth is this: we really don't need to test them on animals. It's just not necessary. The animal-testing culture comes from an old belief that anything is expendable in the quest for things that will make our lives better. It comes from either a misunderstanding of what animals experience or a complete disregard for it.
This is why I have big heart-eyes for those beauty companies that proudly exclude animals from the formulation & production of their beauty products! And guess what? There are a lot of them. And I mean a lot. More and more companies are going cruelty-free and even, in some cases, vegan.
Now, listen: that doesn't mean you're going to like the list of companies that are not cruelty-free. (You can find an updated one here on Cruelty Free Kitty). With a commitment to cruelty-free products, drugstore shopping becomes a thing of the past (as well as shopping with some big-name cosmetics companies that we all know and love). It's disappointing, to be sure.
But you know what's great? Jeanie and Sherry at Elements of Carytown (ElementsBeautyShop.com) have made a commitment to only carry cruelty-free products! So you can shop Elements with ease knowing that nothing you put in your cart comes from a company that tests on animals. You'll remember Elements from a few posts I've done before — it's a family- and woman-owned beauty boutique in Richmond, Virginia that (thank the heavens!) also ships nation-wide through their website. They carry amazing brands like Malin + Goetz, Joanna Vargas, Erno Laszlo, and Eve Lom. You can see all the brands they carry here!
See below for a few of my favorite cruelty-free products from Elements, and don't forget to use my code GORGEOUS when you shop online or in-store for 10% off of your purchase!
I love anything rose-scented and I adore Tokyo Milk's hand cream! Their products are great, but if I'm totally honest one if the biggest things I like about the company (other than being cruelty-free) is that their packaging is so darn cute.
Serum is my jam, and if you're not using it you should be. All skin needs nutrients deeper down than moisturizer can reach, and that's where serum comes in! REN's serums are amazing, and who doesn't want a firmer, smoother face?
Jack Black Double Duty Moisturizer, $20 for size shown
This one's for your fella. They need skincare too! Jack Black makes great skincare for men and Husband is a big fan of their double duty moisturizer. SPF 20 for the win, too!
I don't wash my brushes as much as I tell you to (once a week!), but when I do, I adore a solid cleanser. It's just so easy and neat! beautyblender's solid cleanser was my first and my favorite. Cruelty-free and good at its job.
I love a good wine color on my nails this time of year! Burgundy is where it's at in the fall. Lean it a little toward the pink/berry side like Deb does and you'll find it on my nails for the next few months. Deborah Lippmann makes some amazing colors!
It's exactly what it sounds like: mojito-flavored lip balm. And it's legit. It's the perfect consistency... not to sticky, not too thick, not too thin and liquid-y. Right in the middle to make your lips feel juicy and to get you ready for happy hour!
Snap a picture of your haul and post it to social media using #ElementsBeautyHaul to be entered to win a $50 gift card!
