Every time summer rolls around I play a little game with myself every day where I try to figure out just how little makeup I can put on and still feel good + put together. Especially since moving to LA, which is like summer almost all the time, I love being able to look like the very best version of my *natural* self.
This idea extends out to most of my beauty routine, really... as little as possible. The one exception I've made this year is to begin a thorough skincare routine with Arbonne's RE9 anti-aging line (no regrets! my skin is incredible right now! and it makes "as little makeup as possible" work much better). But more often than not, these days, my hair is unwashed & in a messy bun (dry shampoo to the rescue!), and my face is either makeup-free or made to look that way.
I thought I'd put together a round-up of the products I'm using daily to keep the routine minimal and natural! It's rare for me to use products consistently — more often than not I try different things every day — but when you find something that works, stick with it. At least for now!
Summer Skincare Favorites
The folks at Bioderma were lovely enough to send over a few bottles of their well-loved makeup remover, which I need. I don't love an extra cleansing step — nine times out of ten I've just woken up from having fallen asleep on the couch and want to get under my covers as fast as possible — but my cleanser works so much better when I've already removed my makeup.
I use the hydrating version of this product because my skin is usually in desperate need of extra hydration, and I love the way this removes my makeup without drying out my skin — especially in the summer when I'm out in the sun more often (and that sunshine dries out your skin!). I just put it on a cotton pad and swipe the makeup right off.
Arbonne RE9 Advanced Intensive Renewal Serum & Restorative Day Cream
As I mentioned, I just started a consistent skincare regimen with Arbonne's RE9 Advanced anti-aging line because I also just became an Arbonne Independent Consultant. I love the condition of my skin right now after only two weeks, and it makes it that much easier to wear less makeup. Skincare works best when used in conjunction with other products from the same line, but not everyone can afford to purchase an entire skincare regimen at once (although preferred clients get 20% off of everything and 40% off of the set — worth it! ask me about it!).
So these are two of the products that will really do some work for your skin during the summer months. Anyone past the age of 26, in my opinion, should be using a serum to pack some extra nutrients and hydration into your skin! Prevention is the goal here. I adore the way the RE9 Advanced Intensive Renewal Serum makes my skin feel, and this was the first Arbonne product I ever used.
And we all need to wear sunscreen regularly year-round. Really. All over. I'm very bad at this; I use it regularly on my face, but not on my body (only when I'm out in the sun regularly). UV rays accelerate your aging like crazy! So I'm loving the RE9 Advanced Restorative Day Cream. I use the extra moisture version, and it's got broad spectrum SPF 20.
Side note: one of the reasons I support Arbonne so whole-heartedly is their commitment to pure, safe, and beneficial ingredients. If ingredients are your thing, take a look at their products! Everything is plant-based & vegan.
Summer Makeup Favorites
Full disclosure: everything I'm wearing right now is Mirabella! I work for Mirabella but I do not benefit at all, whatsoever, by recommending it or from your purchase of it. I just love the makeup so much! You can order online or find a local salon that carries it. Bonus to shopping online: you don't have to worry about picking the wrong foundation color — take the Fitzpatrick test to tell you what color you'll be!
Oh lordy, how I love this foundation! BB and CC creams are usually like tinted moisturizers, but this is Mirabella's full-coverage foundation. It melts so beautifully into the skin so that you don't look like you're wearing foundation, and it feels absolutely weightless! I love to just pat a little bit of this on my face with my fingers in the areas where I want some coverage.
It's so beneficial for your skin, too. It packs an extra punch of SPF 20, controls oil, reduces redness, and improves your skin texture. So good!
Mirabella Bronzed in Baked Sand and Brilliant in Swirling Pearl
Ugh, these two products. So. Beautiful. I don't tan much (I just freckle), so I love to add a warm glow to my skin with Baked Sand: I dust it across my hairline, down my temples, and on the tops of my cheekbones (where the sun would hit me were I to develop a nice tan). It's got a hint of shimmer in it and makes my skin look so smooth and radiant.
Swirling Pearl is such a gorgeous highlighter and I use it all over to give myself a great summer glow! I pat some on the tops of my cheekbones, under my brows, on the very center of my eyelids, and on the inner corners of my eyes. I just want that fresh, radiant glow, and Swirling Pearl delivers.
This is one of Mirabella's limited-edition products that's out right now. We call it a cream eyeshadow but a) it feels very light & airy like a mousse and b) I use it as blush! It's so beautiful on fair skin. It's weightless, long-lasting and oil-controlling. It's got some shimmer in it so it works beautifully with the Baked Sand and Swirling Pearl to give you a summer glow! It's also beautiful on the eyes. I just apply & blend with my finger tips.
Real talk: I kind of hate waterproof mascaras. I only use them when absolutely necessary (which is very rarely on myself — commonly on brides). They make your lashes stiff, they flake throughout the day, and they are so hard to get off without majorly damaging your lashes. On top of that, you can't really build up your lashes to be longer & fuller, you just sort of get one thin coat.
No joke, this mascara fixes all of those problems! I can build up my lashes, they stay soft and flexible, there's no flaking, and for a waterproof mascara, it's pretty easy to remove! No pulling your lashes out. It works & feels just like a regular mascara, but it's waterproof! I wear this every single day. Every. Single. Day. Perfect for summer pool & beach time!
Extra Summer Favorites
There are a few products that don't strictly fit into the skincare or makeup categories but I am definitely making use of them regularly!
(not pictured) I adore this balm for my lips, my dry elbows, and my cuticles! It's so moisturizing and comfortable. I love rose-scented things but this also comes in unscented, coconut, and cherry. It's a cult favorite and has so many uses! When Husband & I were out of town he had a split cuticle; we had a bandaid, but no Neosporin. I put some Balm Dotcom on it and wrapped it up in the bandaid, and it healed in no time!
I'm a little more active in the summer than I am other times of the year (a little). We spent a day in the park with our friends a few days ago playing cornhole and whiffle ball. No joke: I was sore the next day! I'm still sore! So I've been slathering this on and it feels & smells so good. Throw this in your bag on beach days when you'll be going on a run, stand-up paddle boarding, or doing some other kind of activity that you don't do on a regular basis.
I have sung the praises of this dry shampoo time and time again, and I still haven't found anything that I like more! I do hope & pray for a comparable product with higher quality ingredients, but alas, this is currently my winner. I love the fruity smell and I love its effectiveness! I use dry shampoo way more than regular shampoo (I shampoo 2x/week), especially during the summer. Suave's dry shampoo just works so well at absorbing the oil in my fine hair and keeping it looking good throughout the day without reapplying!
The lovely folks at Zazzle were generous enough to let me pick out an acrylic tray, and I love this little beauty for keeping things together & organized! I can keep my whole summer beauty routine on it instead of spread out across the bathroom like it normally is (sorry, Husband!). There are also different shapes, sizes, and TONS of designs to choose from!
What are your favorite summer products? Do you minimize & streamline your routine the way I do?
